Weekly Update: September 24

Hello Robina Families:

We are into the full swing of things here at the school. Thank you to all the students, parents, and staff for your efforts as we adjust into our new routines! With the number of different temperatures and weather we have been experiencing, please remember to send your child with appropriate outerwear. Dressing in layers is best! For the younger ones when it is super wet out, it is also not a bad idea to send extra socks and pants in your child's backpack. Thanks for your help with this!

VERIFICATION FORMS: VERY IMPORTANT!!

This is a quick reminder to get those online verification forms done. Our school has only half of our population with them done. There were both email and text reminders sent out to you from Black Gold this past week -- they actually use the word REGISTRATION in some of the emails and text messages, however, this is actually the verification update for all of your information. This replaces that paperwork package that we used to send home every fall. The faster you get this done, the quicker we can have our information updated. Already we have had to make some calls home and phone numbers and email addresses have changed and it makes communication very difficult -- this is worrisome to us, especially in an emergency. Thank you in advance for getting to this quickly!

Here is a copy of what the email looks like in case you are unable to find it in your inbox:

School Nutrition Program:

The Government of Alberta has allocated funds for School Nutrition. We are looking to our wonderful community for some ideas as to how we could go about increasing positive nutrition for our children.

Please click on this link to submit your ideas!

TERRY FOX RUN: Friday, September 29th at 1:00 pm

All parents are welcome to join us for our annual Terry Fox Run/Walk. We will depart from RBES at 1:00 pm after a brief assembly in the gym at 12:45 pm. We are asking all students to wear the color orange on Friday to support "Orange Shirt Day" - Every Child Matters! You can choose to use the online form to make a donation for cancer research or send a toonie for Terry with your child and we will submit a donation for you. The Devon Lions Club is once again supporting this event and providing snacks for all participants. THANK YOU SO MUCH DEVON LIONS FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND GENEROSITY!!!

This year John Maland High School, Riverview and Holy Spirit will be joining us. All participating schools will stop at RBES to enjoy their snack before continuing on their way. If you are interested in volunteering or joining us on the walk, we would love to see you come out!

Don't forget to fill out those online permission forms!

Weekly Update: September 10, 2017

Welcome Back Robina Families!

What a great first week of school we had this week! The students were very excited to get started in their new classrooms and although there were a few hiccups, things went really well. THANK YOU to all of our parents who shared Back to School pics on our FaceBook page. We always love to see those! If you haven't found our FaceBook page yet, you can click on this link: RBES FACEBOOK PAGE to like our page and see those updates.

Our first assembly this past Friday was the best "First Assembly" of the year I have ever had in my career. The students were all so engaged, were great listeners when they needed to be and were showing just how amazing they can all be. It was so great to see and feel their enthusiasm. As always, parents are invited to come out to any Friday assembly they like.

For our new families, we do a Student of the Week from each class every Friday that there is school. This is for our K-4 students as our PreK (PK) kiddos don't have classes on Fridays. Our Student of the Week celebrations will begin on the last Friday in September. Classroom teachers will let you know when your child is Student of the Week so you have the opportunity to attend that assembly and see them receive their certificate. I also include photos each week of the Students of the Week, so if you miss out, you are still able to see your child's picture.

Our RODZILLA: Science, Magic and Illusion show was enjoyed by our students and the energy level was pretty high for the bulk of the performance. I would say it was a smashing success! There are a few great pictures to share and I will add those to this post on Monday, for those who are interested in having a look. We will also post some to our Face Book page.

SCHOOL COMMUNICATION:

This blog is our main communication from the office and replaces a monthly newsletter. The link will be emailed out to you every week (generally on Sunday) so that you can stay up to date with what is happening in our school. Our teachers also blog regularly and will post curricular updates on their classroom blogs so that you can stay informed about your child's learning and other classroom activities. It is really important to keep your contact information current with the office as we email out all of our information using Power School. If you have an email, phone or address change, please let us know as soon as possible in order for us to stay current and on top of things.

Our websitehttp://rbes.blackgold.ca/ is another fabulous place to get information and is updated regularly. Here you can find links to all teacher blogs, links to directly email staff, calendars, news and other important information.

Another great way to stay up to date with school happenings is to subscribe to our GOOGLE CALENDAR. This of course works with a gmail account. We recommend that all families have at least one gmail email address to communicate with the school. They are free and easy to create if you don't have one. Many people use this for school items only and then you have much less to search through when you are looking back for information. Your child will have a black gold gmail email address for their school career and this allows families to have one platform to operate from. If all of this is GREEK to you, because you have been meaning to catch up and become tech savvy, but that hasn't happened yet - - - that is ok! We are happy to help you. We have a parent computer station in our office for all parents to use when you are in the school. We can also help you set up a gmail app and calendar app on your mobile device so that all the data automatically feeds to your phone. Just give us a call in the office or pop by. WE are more than happy to help!

HOW TO CONNECT TO OUR GOOGLE CALENDAR:

Click on this link: http://rbesnews.blogspot.ca/p/calendar.html or click on the tab near the top of our blog that says CALENDAR.

Once you are there you will see this at the bottom of the calendar:

Just click on it and follow the instructions to merge it with your own google calendar. EASY PEASY! Again . . . if you would like help with this, please let us know.

Our Google Calendar is updated daily or as soon as something needs to be added or changed. We do not recommend printing the calendar and posting it on your fridge as we don't send out notifications for daily input. However, if you are a subscriber to the calendar, you will receive a change notification if you like. This is something you can control in your settings. We also post the next week or so of important dates at the end of this blog post every week, so you will also have a quick weekly view that way.

STUDENT ABSENCES:

Our school (like all BGRS schools) is on an automated call out system. By 9:00 am and 1:00 pm every day the system will email, text and/or call parents of absent students. To prevent these sometimes annoying messages, please contact our school and let us know in advance of a student absence. You can call: 780-987-3705 and leave a voice mail after hours or you can email: maureen.horrocks@blackgold.ca and leave a quick message. You can also let your child's teacher know of an absence as they appreciate being in the information loop as well. Either method is fine and we will enter it in the system so that you are not bothered during the day. Of course the call outs are important so that we can keep all of our children safe. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter! It is much appreciated!

SCHOOL COUNCIL:

Our RBES School Council (RBES-SC) and Parent Fundraising Committee (RBES-PFC) have regular monthly meetings and we are always looking for parents to join us and have a voice. Our first annual general meeting for the year is on Wednesday, September 20th at 6:30 pm in the staff room. The first meeting of the year goes through the election process and is a quick introduction to the roles of the two different groups. You don't have to sign up for anything to come to the meetings to have a voice! We would love to see more parents coming out to participate.

In order for our Fundraising Group to contact you independently, there is a membership form that you need to fill out. You can find a copy of that here: https://goo.gl/EBGRCt Please download it and send a copy to the school and we will forward that to our RBES-PFC chair. You can also pick up a copy in the office and the form will be available at all meetings as well as being sent home once just before our first meeting.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Monday, Sept. 11: Kinder AM/PM and M/W classes First full day

Tuesday, Sept. 12: Happy Birthday Mr. Van Huis!

Thursday, Sept. 14: Grade 3 Rock Walk

Friday, Sept. 15: NO SCHOOL - PD DAY & BGRS WELCOME BACK

FUTURE EVENTS:

Wednesday, Sept. 27: Picture Day - all classes except T/TH Kinder and PK

Thursday, Sept. 28: Picture Day for T/TH Kinder and PK classes

Friday, Sept. 29: Terry Fox Run/Walk -- all Devon Schools -- 1:00 pm start

That is all for now! If you have any questions, you can call or email any one of the office team and we are more than happy to be of assistance. You can click on this link to see a listing of all of our staff with contact information included: http://rbes.blackgold.ca/about/staff-contacts/

Have a fantastic week,

Weekly Update: June 30, 2017

Hello Robina Families!

Well we did it! We all made it to the end of the year and what a year it was! If anyone has been around our school yard today, you will notice that our modular installation has started. A number of playground pieces were removed, as well as one of our most favourite and beautiful trees. The asphalt pad was being dug up as the ground is being prepped for our new addition. I am sure there will be many changes to see over the summer months.

The following message is being posted on the teacher blogs and in case you missed in, I am adding it here:

We hope you have a great summer and we look forward to seeing everyone again in September!  You will receive an email from your child’s new teacher in August.

The first day of school is on Tuesday, September 5.  This will be a full day. Please call the school if your child is going to be absent that first morning. This is very important as we juggle changes in our registration numbers on that first day.

School supply information can be found on our website at    http://rbes.blackgold.ca/parents/school-supplies/   You can order packages throughout the summer, however, there is an additional charge of $5 after the August long weekend.

Additional Summer and September Information can be found on our website on our home page.

During the summer, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Principal, Mrs. Kloschinsky, by email: kathy.kloschinsky@blackgold.ca

I will be checking my email at least once per week in the mid summer months and will be in for the last two weeks of August.

YEAR END ASSEMBLY:

We enjoyed our year end slide show and many students were clapping, singing and bopping along to the music. Every time I think that this project is such a huge undertaking and wonder if I should continue with it, I then see the enjoyment that the students have from trying to find themselves in the video and remembering all the great moments of the year. Every year I remember and realize that this brings a nice closure and celebration of our favourite memories. You can watch the video below or click this link to watch it in a new window: https://goo.gl/NyRtpx

It was wonderful to see so many guests at our assembly. Our track team received a lot of track awards and were very successful. We had some teary moments as we said farewell to staff that are moving on to new schools and other adventures. Here are a few pictures for you to enjoy:

You can enjoy the rest of the assembly pictures here: https://goo.gl/u5aCCC There are pictures of students receiving track awards, some rose ceremony pictures with Mrs. Fleming as her class did a beautiful send off while the rest of the school say, "What a Day!" as well as group photos of the grade 4s with their certificates. It was so nice to see the gym filled with families to celebrate the last part of the year with us!

Thank you for a wonderful school year. Our staff enjoyed working with you and your children this year and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Happy Canada Day and Best Wishes to all of you for a fun and relaxing summer!

Our grade 4s have been doing our recycling for this past year and we just received news that we are the top bottle recycling school in Alberta!! Wow!! Way to go Grade 4s for all of your hard work and a HUGE thank you to Ms. Potter for organizing that crew all year long. The students received a $250 check for their efforts and their teachers have a great plan for using that money that we will share with you shortly. We have some awesome pictures from the day, but unfortunately I am having trouble with blogger today and it is being finicky with some of my uploads. I will give it some time and edit this post later tonight or tomorrow and add those pictures.
