Weekly Update May 19, 2016

Hello Robina Families,

We hope your family enjoys the long weekend! When the kids come back to school on Tuesday we will be starting our Bike Safety Program and following that they will be starting swimming lessons.

BIKE SAFETY WEEK STARTS TUESDAY:
Beginning on Tuesday, May 24th our yearly Bike Safety Week (May 24-27) kicks off during regular daily physical education classes.  Throughout the week students will be participating in activities designed to promote the learning of the rules of the road and developing safe riding habits.  Please mark your child’s name on their helmet.
This year the school has coordinated our efforts with the Devon Bike Association and will be offering proper helmet sizing and the opportunity to safety check the kid's bikes. As culminating event the school will be setting up a “Bike Rodeo” at the Dale Fisher Arena on Friday, May 27th to give the students a fun way of demonstrating their safe and effective riding skills.  You will need to do a permission form online before Friday, May 27!

There are extra bicycles and helmets available to borrow from the school if needed.  Students who regularly commute to and from school using their bikes are encouraged to continue using the outdoor bike racks; those bringing in their bikes solely for the PE classes will be able to park their bikes within the school gym in areas designated for their grade levels.

RED CROSS SWIMMING @ SCHOOL INFORMATION:

The registration process has begun for our annual June school swimming program.  This year the school is branching out and trying something new which we feel will be of benefit to all our Grade 1-4 students.  Students in Kindergarten will be swimming but not having lessons.
This year the school will be taking part in the Red Cross Swimming @ School program where the kids will be instructed by trained lifeguards about water safety and swimming skills.

Within the program students will be placed into levels, based on parent responses to the skill survey, and then work on skills similar to what they would be working on in the regular Swim Kid program.  There have been some questions as to whether students can earn swimming badges.  With the Swimming @ School program the students will not have the opportunity to earn badges BUT if the student is able to present their "swimming report card" from their previous lessons the swim instructors can check off completed skills on the Swim Kids report cards.

In completing the student swimming skill survey here is a programming comparison to aid in correctly identifying your child's CURRENT swim level:

Swim@School Level          Red Cross Swim Kids
Beginner                   =          Swim Kids 1-3
Intermediate             =         Swim Kids 4-6
Advanced                 =          Swim Kids 7-10

With the Swimming @ School program the school is subsidizing the program cost, so it is only $25.00 for two weeks of lessons.

Permission forms and online payment through PowerSchool are available now and must be completed before June 13.

2015-16 YEARBOOKS:

Yearbooks must be ordered before Friday May 27!  They are available to add to your Power School cart online or alternatively you may send $20 cash or check in an envelope with “Yearbook Order” and your child’s name and class on it.  The yearbooks are $20 for a 32 page color yearbook. They will be delivered in the early fall.

SPRING PHOTO ORDERS DUE JUNE 3:

You should have received your child’s Spring Photo package.  Orders can be made up to June 3, 2016.  If you do not want to purchase your photos, please return them to the school before June 3.

DISTRICT TRACK AND FIELD LUNCH ORDER DUE TUESDAY

This year all the students who are participating in the district track and field event are being given the option to order hot lunch from the RMS parent council in advance of the meet.  Come the day of the event everyone's lunches will be ready in advance and delivered hot right to the team meeting location, saving us time and effort.  The hot lunch ordering is completely optional and students are more than welcome to bring their own lunches from home should they choose.

If you are interested in ordering lunch here is the link to the order form - https://goo.gl/b4gTMU

Unfortunately there is no online payment option for the lunches as it's being arranged through the RMS parent council.  Payment for lunches can be made direct to the school by cheque made payable to Robina Baker Elementary.  The order deadline for lunches is Tuesday, MAY 24TH AT NOON.  Our school order for all students goes in that afternoon and no late orders will be accepted.

Weekly Update: May 6, 2016

Hello Robina Families,

What a week we had this week – full of activities and excitement!

Fort McMurray Fires

I think we were all captivated by the news of the Fort McMurray fires.  I know some of our families have been directly affected and have taken in friends and families that have been evacuated.  Our school, and many other Black Gold schools, will be welcoming students from Fort McMurray to go to school with us until they can return to Fort McMurray.

Our grade three classes felt compelled to help.  As part of the Grade 3 curriculum ~ Global Citizenship, they have decided to help out the people of Fort McMurray by donating to the Red Cross. On Wednesday, May 11th, the students in Grade 3 will be selling baked goods that they've made at home. The items will be sold for $1.00 at morning & lunch recess.

Changes in Parking and Bus Drop Off and Pick Up

We apologize for such short notice given to us - and you - in the change in parking and busing area.  In an effort to improve busing drop off and parent parking, Black Gold Transportation and Facilities have switched the parent parking and busing areas.  So starting today, parents can park where the buses use to line up; and please keep the area in front of our school clear for buses during bus times.

Spring Picture Day is Monday, May 9

Complete the flyer that was sent home this week and send with your child on Spring Picture Day.

Education Week Activities

Also, we invite you all to come out to see all of the amazing paintings the students created with the 4 Cats Art Studio On Monday, May 9th from 3:30 - 6:00 in a Celebration of the Masters!

TRACK and FIELD:

Track and Field sign up and practices will begin this week. Grade 1s and 2s are being coached by Mrs. Kloschinsky and the Grade 3s and 4s will be coached by Mr. Henderson. We will be looking for parent volunteers for Thursday, June 2 to help out with the large team that we usually take to RMS. If you are able to help out, please let us know on the form that we will be sending out very soon. :)

DEVON RIVER VALLEY WRISTBAND CHALLENGE:

Great news to share! Our students can now participate and do activities in our beautiful Devon River Valley and earn a wristband to go into our physical activity wrist band draws that the LRC (Leduc Recreation Center) sponsors. The Town of Devon pool will be providing passes to win in the month of June.

How do you get a wristband for the draw? We have made it as easy as pie. Simply send me an email: kathy.kloschinsky@blackgold.ca stating your child's name (and class) and what they did for an activity and for how long. Eg. My child, Jared Wilhauk in 4A did a 45 minute hike on the trails in the river valley. Then I will send a wristband to their classroom for them to write their name on and enter the draw.

I would like to thank Echo Houle for advocating for this idea and working with the Town of Devon to make it happen!

PARENT SURVEY RESULTS:

I will be sending out the results in a separate email this week. Thank you in advance to all of you that took the time to respond. It was very helpful in making our planning decisions as we move forward.

2015-16 YEARBOOKS:

Yearbooks are now available to add to your Power School cart online. They are $20 for a 32 page color yearbook. Good news - there is a team of us already working on them. They will be delivered in the early fall.

SPIRIT WEAR ORDERS:

Wooohoooo! This is finally ready to roll! Mr. Larson has received the sizer samples from the Spirit Wear company and we have all our ducks in a row for the ordering form and payment of fees. Sizers will be available in the foyer and if you are unable to come in to help out your child choose a size, we are happy to do so for you and send a quick note home.

The order form is at this link: RBES Raptor Spirit Wear Order Form

Please fill out a separate form for each child in your family. When paying online, you will find each of the 3 items in the Optional Fees and you just add as many items as you have chosen on your form into your cart.
