Weekly Update: April 30, 2017

Hello Robina Families,

Can you believe that tomorrow is the first of May!  April was cold, but it went by very quickly! I would like to send a shout out to our Klondike Relay team who were presented with their certificates and a few ribbons at our Assembly on Friday.

The following teams placed in the top 10:

Boys Long Jump - 3rd place
Boys Ball Throw - 5th place (no ribbon available yet)

Girls Ball Throw - 7th place

Girls Long Jump - 5th place

ASSEMBLY

The theme this month is truth, trust & honesty. This week we had a "surprise" drama performance from Evergreen Theatre called "Jurassic Bark". The students were so engaged in the performance and 12 lucky grade 4 students got to be a part of the performance.

Here is a summary of the story: Rex is a stray dog who has a hard time sharing his things. Polly is a paleontologist who spends her time digging in the dirt. When these two strangers come across a huge, mysterious bone deep in the ground, will they be able to work together to discover where it came from? Or will Rex bury the evidence before they can even begin? Set in Alberta’s world-famous Badlands, this dino-sized adventure explores our relationship to the creatures who came before us, and what we can learn from playing in the dirt.

Permission Forms must be completed on PowerSchool by May 12, 2017

Beginning Monday, May 15 our yearly Bike Safety Week kicks off during regular daily physical education classes.  Students will be participating in activities designed to promote the learning of the rules of the road and developing safe riding habits.
As culminating event the school will be setting up a “Bike Rodeo” at the Dale Fisher Arena on May 18 to give the students a fun way of demonstrating their safe and effective riding skills.
There are extra bicycles and helmets available to borrow from the school if needed.  Students who regularly commute to and from school using their bikes are encouraged to continue using the outdoor bike racks; those bringing in their bikes solely for the PE classes will be able to park their bikes within the school gym in areas designated for their grade levels.

Safety First May 10 and May 12

Prior to the students getting on their bikes, we have help from Alberta Health and the Devon Bike Association:
Wednesday, May 10 – A Public Health Nurse will be here to do presentations about why we need to wear a helmet.

Friday, May 12 – The President of the Devon Bike Association (DBA)  is going to do a short presentation at the assembly focusing on bike safety. Mr. Hutchings is a retired RCMP officer and avid cyclist who has organized many large cycling events locally and provincially.    After the assembly, other members of the DBA are going check our student’s helmets for proper fit.  Please send your child’s helmet with them to school Friday, May 10.

More swimming details coming very soon. Due to fundraising initiatives, lessons will cost around $26. Students will be leveled according to their ability. As soon as final times and rates are confirmed, information and permission forms will be up on Power School later this week!

Weekly Update: April 16, 2017

Hello Robina Families,

We hope you are enjoying your Easter Break.  We had a short but active week!  We were happy to have drum fit again for Phys Ed classes and the teachers did a fantastic job of leading their own lessons this year. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun in the process.

Personally I was away for most of the week at the 2017 uLead Conference in Banff.  Presenters at the conference included Alberta’s Minister of Education, the Honourable David Eggen, New South Wales’ Minister of Education, the Honourable Adrian Picolli, Simon Breakspear (Sydney, Australia), Carol Campbell (OISE), Gillian Hamilton (Glasgow) and talented educational leaders from around the world.  Several other notable education leaders from around the world also attended and participated in many of the sessions. It was also the kickoff for the #WomenEdCanada movement in a very uplifting and empowering pre-conference. The information and learning was incredible and I am eager to share the knowledge in our community.

We have some staff changes to share with you. We are sad to let you know that Mr. Larson will be leaving our school. He will be moving to the new school in Beaumont, Champs Vallee, as the Assistant Principal. Although the school will not be ready for students until January 2018, the Admin team will be starting right away preparing and planning for the new school. We would like to wish Mr. Larson all the best in his new school and to let him know we will miss him terribly! However, as they say, the show must go on! We are excited to announce that we have hired Mr. Jared Coffin as our new Assistant Principal and we are looking forward to his start in a couple of weeks. Mr. Coffin hopes to come visit a couple of times before he officially starts to say hello and to meet everyone. He is coming to us from Beau Meadow School in Beaumont and is very excited to be joining the Raptors family!

As many of you know, Mrs. Kuntz will be going on maternity leave!  Her last day was this last Thursday. We can't wait to meet her new 'wee' one. In her classroom, we would like to welcome Miss Hunter. She is excited to be joining our team and has been volunteering in the classroom for awhile to help 1A have a smooth transition.

Weekly Update: April 2, 2017

Hello Robina Families,

Spring break seem to go by in the blink of an eye! We are into the final stretch of the school year and this is an important time to demonstrate to our students what perseverance is. With warmer weather, many would rather be outside and it is tough to encourage some of our kiddos to continue to focus on learning. It is important that students still maintain proper sleep habits so that they are well rested for school. We would appreciate home support in this area!! If you need help encouraging your child(ren) to sleep and showing them why it is so important, check out this great website: http://www.sleepforkids.org/  It is a kid friendly interactive site that parents and children can work through together.

FAMILY DANCE:

It was wonderful to see so many of our families out for the Family Dance right before spring break! Here is a link of some of my favourite pictures from the event!
https://goo.gl/u6LWzh

There are so many thank you's to send out for our Family Dance and I am sure to miss someone if I start listing them individually, so other than thanking Becky Dupont (HUGE THANKS TO THIS AWESOME LADY) for chairing and organizing this event, I am going to leave my other thank you's to the following:

TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED OUT WITH MAKING OUR FAMILY DANCE A SUCCESS! WHETHER YOU HELPED OUT BY VOLUNTEERING OR BY MAKING A DONATION; WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU! YOUR SUPPORT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

April 3 - Back to School

April 4 - Klondike Relays (bus leaves at 3:45)

April 5 - Early Dismissal - 2:21 pm

April 7 - Zirka performance at assembly (9:00 after Student of the Week)

Have a great week,
