Weekly Update: December 17, 2017

Hello Robina Families,

Last week of school before Christmas! The hustle and bustle of the season is also happening at RBES! The staff and students have been working like busy little elves in their workshops. In between math and reading lessons and Christmas Concert practices, there has been lots of art, decorating, singing and buddy activities. The classes in the new wing even found time to make hot chocolate during one of their afternoon breaks!

Nutrition Program Update:

This past week we "rolled out" our new smoothie carts! Your child might have mentioned to you that the smoothie cart visited their classroom. When the cart visits the classroom, teachers prepare a fresh smoothie with all kinds of yummy ingredients blended together. In this round of the smoothie cart, students had the chance to try spinach and avocado blended together with berries, bananas, and yogurt! Throughout the year, we hope to try out new recipes that students can bring home with them! The smoothie cart is just part of a bigger initiative at RBES to provide education about how to make healthy choices with our food!

Christmas Concert Week!

Important Concert Information

The concerts take place in the Robina Baker Gym and will not run for more than 30 minutes.  The doors will open 30 minutes prior to the start of the show.

For the evening concert, students will report to their classroom.  After the concert, students will be picked up in their classroom.  Please keep your non-performing children with you at all times.

As well we will be asking that everyone removes their outdoor shoes (you will be provided with a bag to keep your shoes under your chair) - if you get cold feet, you might want to bring some slippers or indoor shoes. Thank you for helping to keep our floors dry, safe and clean!

Comfy Couch tickets are still available on PowerSchool!  The draws will be made in the morning for the shows on the day.

The January menu will be up soon!   Here is the link to the website in case you have not ordered before and would like to now: http://rbes.blackgold.ca/parents/hot-lunches/

PLEASE NOTE - When you order, check the home room of your child - it may be last year's.  Be sure to change the class so your child's lunch ends up in the correct class!

ASSEMBLY UPDATE:

This week we continued the generosity and "giving" theme. The students were reminded of the 12 Days of Christmas Kindness. Several of our kindness students already had their names entered into a draw to win some fun gift bags of goodies (donated by school council). We also talked about how "singing carols" is a gift to many and we sang Jingle Bells and Silent Night. Next week we will start off the day with a chance to sing carols together for a few minutes.

Weekly Update: December 10, 2017

Hello Robina Families,

December is quickly running away from us. There is so much information to share today, I certainly hope that I haven't missed anything. Please make sure you read carefully as there are a few really important items . . . one being our new BOKS before school activity program for students. Also we are encouraging generosity and acts of Kindness this holiday season and we would love if this was also acknowledged and encouraged at home. Grab your favourite reading spot and get comfy to go through a long post! If you have any questions, please let us know and we are always happy to help!

PAINT DAY:

Last Sunday was our 2nd Annual Kids Paint Day and it was another rousing success. Thank you to our school council for putting on the event and for Ms. Coleman, Mrs. Milson, Mrs. Dupont and Mrs. Klaassen for all of your hard work in getting the event organized. We would like to send a huge shout out to our staff and parent volunteers - without your help this event is not possible. Here are a few group photos from the event:

Interested in more pictures from the event? They can be found here: https://goo.gl/YGsF6W

LOST N' FOUND:

The lost and found is truly overflowing once again. Please send your child to have a look in the bin or feel free to drop by yourself. Here are some pictures so that you have an idea of what is in the bin. We have spread it out on the tables for this week. At the end of the week, we will be donating it as many items have been in the bin for many days. Thanks!

ASSEMBLY UPDATE:

This week we started the generosity and "giving" theme. The students were introduced to the 12 Days of Christmas Kindness. They all brainstormed different kind acts that we could do for the last couple of weeks. These will be posted on a bulletin board outside of the office. As staff notice students doing these "kind acts" over the next several days, they will be "caught" with a snowflake to put their name on the board. The challenge is for everyone to be extra "kind" and "generous" this holiday season. You can click here for the agenda: https://goo.gl/riTdrg

CONGRATULATIONS!!! to OUR STUDENTS' OF THE WEEK:

Weekly Update: December 1st, 2017

Hello Robina Families,

We can't believe that it is already December! We have a busy month ahead with Christmas Concerts, our Christmas elves campaign, and all the wonderful learning in our classrooms!

Demolition Days:

As the saying goes, out with the old, and in with the new. The students and teachers are settling nicely into their new spaces. Our facilities team is also working hard to sort out a few of the last minute details in the building. Thank you to everyone for their patience as we bring our new wing to life. You might have heard your child talk about the big tractors tearing apart the old classrooms. We certainly had something to talk about during recess this week. Take a look:

School Board Visit:

We were very excited to welcome our School Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Norman Yanitski to Robina Baker on Thursday. A few of our Grade 4 students toured our guests classrooms to classroom for them to see all the great learning that our staff and students are doing. The School Board also had the opportunity to visit our new wing. Here are a few pictures from our tour.

Crosswalk Safety:

We always want to do our best to keep our Robina families safe. Our Peace Officers have increased their presence lately and have asked us to provide a reminder regarding our crosswalks. There is an increased amount of parents and students not using our crosswalks. In our school, we educate our students about using the appropriate places to cross the road. Students are getting too close to moving buses and vehicles. To help us, please talk to your child about safely crossing the road and model this whenever you can!

Grade 4 Social Media Presentation:

The Grade 4 students visited Holy Spirit Catholic School this week to participate in a Social Media Safety presentation. Students were very engaged in the presentation which reminded students about being responsible digital citizens. This message is one that we will continue in our weekly assemblies as well as in the classrooms. Being a responsible digital citizen is not just for Grade 4 students. Please check out the following link as a resource you can use at home as well!

CHRISTMAS ELVES:

The Grade Threes kicked off our Christmas Elves Campaign during the Assembly!  Once again, we will be collecting toys and food for the Devon Christmas Elves. The donations need to be delivered to the Christmas Elves on December 8th so we are asking that all donations be brought to the school by December 7th.

This year our Christmas Concerts are later than the day that the Christmas Elves are delivering their hampers so there will be no donations accepted at the Christmas Concerts (December 18-20).  Please send your donations by December 7.

We have been in contact with the Christmas Elves and this is their food “wish list”.  These are just some of the needed food items but any food donation is greatly appreciated.

The class with the most donations will win a root beer float party!

Thank you so much for your support!

I AM GROWING UP:

Check out the excellent video our Devon FCSS ECD (Early Childhood Development) team was a part of creating. It is an excellent overview and resource for understanding our little people. If you can't see it below, you can also find it on our website at: http://rbes.blackgold.ca/parents/parent-links/

RAPTOR SPIRIT WEAR:

Great news! We have Raptor Wear for you to order. Our order deadline will be Friday, December 8th. There will be sample sizers out all next week for your kiddos to try on or for you to come look at and determine what to order for your child. There is a good chance that the orders will not be here until after Christmas, so please don't count on the order being here before then. The return rate of our spirit wear depends on numbers ordered. If you have any questions, please let us know. The website for ordering is: https://goo.gl/Md1JGR and the instructions for ordering are below:

Weekly Update: November 26, 2017

Hello Robina Families,

It was another busy week at school. Mr. Coffin and I had the opportunity to spend some time in all of the classrooms. We are so impressed with all the learning and hard work that happens in our building every single day. We had many students share their work or read to us. My two personal favourites of the week: watching some of the painting the grade twos were doing and watching 3B create in the drawing program on their chromebooks. There are some budding artists in our building!

LOST N' FOUND:

The lost and found is truly overflowing once again. Please send your child to have a look in the bin or feel free to drop by yourself.

ASSEMBLY UPDATE:

This week we continued our Nutrition Theme. We also had a special "Nutrition Presentation" from 1C & 1D. You can see more details about our assembly by having a look at this week's agenda: https://goo.gl/tre31d
