Weekly Update: February 25, 2018

Hello Robina Families,

Before I get started on the regular content of the Weekly Update, I would like to offer our condolences to the Heiber family. As you may have heard, Amanda Heiber was involved in a fatal car accident on Hwy. 19 this past Friday. Amanda was an Education Assistant sub for Black Gold Schools and worked regularly at RBES over the last few months. She has two children at Riverview Middle School and this loss is being felt across the Devon community. I would like to extend our deepest sympathy, love and prayers from the RBES staff to her family and friends during this difficult and tragic time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are lots of activities happening right now at RBES and the busyness has increased signficantly over the last couple of weeks. Our grade 3/4 girls floor hockey team has been practicing hard as our school is once again hosting their tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 9th and 10th. Throughout that week, March 5-9,  there will be a 3 on 3 floor hockey intramural tournament at lunch time for all of those girls, as only some will get to play in the tournament on the weekend. This way everyone gets to have a tournament type experience. The final game of the 3 on 3 intramurals will be on Friday, March 9th at noon and all students are invited to watch and cheer on their favourite team!

The Skip-a-thon was a huge success and I am continually stunned at how passionate this community is about this particular charity. Through your generous donations, $7,246.00 was raised for the Heart and Stroke foundation. That is so fantastic and considering we were just hoping for a toonie per student, we greatly exceeded our goal! A number of our students will have earned individual prizes. Now that our money count is done, the prizes have been ordered and will be handed out as soon as they arrive. In the meantime, we will celebrate the class with largest amount of donations at next Friday's assembly as they win they table top soccer game. We will also celebrate the 3 students who raised the most money and will post pictures next week. We are so very proud of all the work done to support this worthwhile cause. You can see a few pictures below!

ASSEMBLY UPDATE:

The students are continuing their work on the kindness theme this month. The older students created "compliment cards" to pass out when they see kind things happening. The younger students have been really working hard at "noticing" kindness around them and have been nominating their fellow students for the Random Acts of Kindness chart. (more details further on in the blog)

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

We have started our Random Acts of Kindness Challenge again!  When a staff member observes a student in a random act of kindness they give the student a “Random Act of Kindness ticket” and they go to the office to write their name on the “Random Act of Kindness Grid”. Each time we fill the grid, we draw 20 squares and those students receive a prize.

Weekly Update: February 4, 2018

Hello Robina Families,

Add caption
As we dip into another deep freeze this winter, we hope to encourage our students to forget about being cold and focus on kindness. February is one of my favourite months of the year -- could be that it is often associated with kindness, pink, love, pink, families, caring and possibly more pink! Kindness truly does matter and if we all do our part, the world will be a happier place!

ASSEMBLY UPDATE:

The students are working on the kindness theme this month. They were reminded of our "Kindness Matters" campaign from last year and we had a discussion on how we could continue to promote kindness beyond our school community. Here is last year's video if you would like to see it again: https://goo.gl/I0I4u7
