Weekly Update: January 28, 2018

Hello Robina Families,

Winter is upon us once again! The big snow fall made for some awesome play at recess time on Friday and the students really enjoyed themselves. Just a reminder to send ski pants, toques, mitts and boots each day. A number of little ones had to be sent in to borrow extra items from the office. Thank you in advance for your help with this.

Accountability Pillar Survey:

This month, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. Parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a mailed survey from Alberta Education (if the school has fewer than 120 students, parents of students in grades 4-12 will receive the survey).

As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for
Alberta Education, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 and Robina Baker Elementary School to ensure that we are equipping students for success.

The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of surveys of
students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality, student outcomes such as
dropout and high school completion rates, and provincial assessments of student learning.
We encourage you to return your survey promptly. Your participation helps provide important
information on the quality of education your child is receiving, and adds your voice to the future of
education in your school and throughout Alberta. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about
experiences with your school.

Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2018, and will be reported publicly as part of our 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.

ASSEMBLY UPDATE:

We continued to work on good behaviour/good manners theme while working our way towards the February Kindness theme. Our students did some great working together in reviewing good behaviour and manners outside of the school. There were lots of great discussions this week and both Mr. Coffin and I are noticing a distint difference in overall student manners. Weekly Update: January 21, 2018

Hello  Robina Families,

Time seems to be really flying by this January! It was really fantastic to have warmer weather and outside recesses this week. Just a reminder to all that this upcoming week is the first of our two skating weeks this winter . . . there are still about 30 permission forms that have not been done yet! We would appreciate all forms being done by tomorrow morning. Thank you in advance for your help with this.

ASSEMBLY UPDATE:

We continued to work on good behaviour/good manners theme while working our way towards the February Kindness theme. Our students did some great working together in their cross grade partners to discuss the abstract message of  the "Color Your World with Kindness" video. Robina Baker Skating Information

The Kindergarten through grade 4 students will be going skating for two weeks this year.  This first week is January 22-25, 2018 with the second one occurring on February 12-15, 2018.

Click here for the schedule for both weeks.

Here is a quick peek at this week's schedule:

Each grade will have a ½ hour time slot on the ice in which they will be participating in learn to skate activities and games which are appropriate for their ability level.
All students must have a current CSA approved helmet.  A cage is recommended but is not mandatory for skating.  Hockey sticks will only be allowed for students in grade 1-4 on the last session of each skating week.  For a student to be allowed to play hockey they will need to have a full cage on their skating helmet.

Students need to wear CSA approved helmets
For example, hockey helmets (need a full cage if they want to play shinny), downhill skiing helmets or horseback riding helmets – Absolutely NO BIKE HELMETS will be allowed.

School skates/helmets
The school does have skates and helmets that can be borrowed by students should they find they do not have skates that fit or a helmet meeting the CSA requirement.

Jackets on!
All students must wear their outdoor jackets while skating.  We are really trying to limit the number of runny noses and sick kids that follow a week of students skating around in shirts or hoodies.  Gloves are a must – they keep fingers warm and offer a bit of protection from falls!  Ski pants are also encouraged, especially with the younger skaters.

Volunteers
All classes are required to have supervision on and off the ice.  If you can help out during your child’s skating time, please let your teacher know.

Permission Forms must be completed by January 21- click here for PowerSchool

Weekly Update: January 14, 2018

Hello and Happy New Year Robina Families,

I hope that everyone had a lovely Christmas break and that after one week back you have all fallen into routine. Besides the cold weather making it tough for our students by staying inside all day, they had a fabulous first week back.

ASSEMBLY UPDATE:

We started a new theme this week - Good Behaviour / Good Manners. The students brainstormed different ways to display manners at assembly and at school in the small assembly time and then on Friday, we reviewed and challenged students to talk about what good manners looks like everywhere.

You can click here for the agenda: January 12th Assembly Agenda

In the grade 3/4 assembly we also talked about good behaviour on technology, reviewed expectations, digital citizenship etc. Our grade 3s and 4s are invited to become a part of the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program for the next 8 Wednesdays while we work on some kindness projects. (You can view the BGRS policy on BYOD on our RBES website at this link: http://rbes.blackgold.ca/parents/byod/).

There are many advantages for students to be working on their own device, however, this is not mandatory and they are not required to bring a device -- we have chromebooks for all to use over the next 8 weeks. This is just an opportunity for those who have a device to bring it once per week to do a project. If they bring a device, they must have a note or email to their teacher stating that they have permission. After we receive that, they will be taught how to log on to the school server to access the internet. This allows us to use all of the internet safety parameters that BGRS has in place. If you have any questions, please let me know and I am happy to answer them.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! to OUR STUDENTS' OF THE WEEK:
