Weekly Update December 9, 2016

Hello Robina Families,

I hope you are all finding a way to keep warm during this deep freeze!! Lots of family time by the fire in our house is helping to keep the chill at bay. Although, most students are being dropped off or come to school on the bus in these cold temperatures, we would still like to remind that they need to have toques, mitts and ski pants. We will continue to have indoor recesses until it is warmer than -18.

Speaking of student clothing, our LOST and FOUND bin is really filling up again. There are coats, toques, mitts, hoodies, sweaters, ski pants, gloves, water bottles and other small items in the bin. Please stop by before Christmas break to check out the bin. After Christmas, anything not collected will be donated to good will.

Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and came out to watch our Christmas Concerts. All concerts were well attended and the students did a fantastic job! We are so very proud of them all. A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to all the RBES staff who worked together to make this Christmas concert happen. It was a total team effort this year and we are hoping you were as pleased with the results as we were. We would also like to send out a SPECIAL Thank You to Tim Horton's for donating all the Hot Chocolate! I think all of our students and Christmas concert guests enjoyed the nice warm treat afterwards. Thank you also goes out to IGA and Independent Foods for providing us with bags for shoes for our concert patrons. Last, but not least, I would like to thank Jared and Tristan (from RMS) for coming out and hosting our grade 3 and 4 concert -- they were fabulous!

If you would like to see an awesome collection of pictures from the night, check out this link: RBES 2016 CHRISTMAS CONCERT PICTURES This includes pictures from day and night time concerts as well as kinders as Pre-Ks. **If anybody happened to get a video of the line dance or Silent Night at the night time grade 3 and 4 concert, we would appreciate if you would share a copy with us!

Here are a couple of my favourites (although there are over a hundred pictures and I really like a lot of them!)

CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS WEEK'S STUDENTS OF THE WEEK!!

ASSEMBLY:  Click here for the agenda to this past week's assembly. As part of our assembly we sang Silent Night all together as we had all learned the song for the concerts. Here is a recording for you to hear/see! So proud of all of these kiddos!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE PRIZE WINNERS BELOW!

CHRISTMAS ELVES DONATIONS!
Once again the RBES community has shown how amazingly generous they are! Lots of food and toys were donated to this worthy cause and our Grade 3s did a great job advertising, sorting, organizing and delivering all of the food and toys dropped off at our school! Thank you very much Rhonda for donating some bussing to help our students in these extreme temperatures!

AUTHOR VISIT DECEMBER 13TH @ 1:00 PM

Tololwa Mollel

Tololwa M. Mollel grew up in Arusha,Tanzania at the times when oral tradition was still alive and well. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Dar-es-Salaam Tanzania, and his master’s degree from the University of Alberta Edmonton. He and his wife and two sons live in Edmonton.
Mollel uses traditional folklore as the basis for his stories and has written over fifteen children's books, even winning the 1996 Writers Guild of Alberta's R. Ross Annett Children's Prize for Big Boy. Although his interest for children's literature began when he was still young, it was not until he went to study in Canada that he realized the depth of experience related in the stories his grandfather told him. He has worked as an actor and university theatre instructor in Tanzania and Canada, and as a writer-in-residence for the Edmonton Public Library, even serving as President of the Writers Guild of Alberta in the late 1990s.
He does extensive work with schools and libraries, with literacy, arts and educational bodies, and with community organizations. In all this work, Mollel has presented, performed and conducted writing, storytelling and dramatic workshops and writer-in-residence programs in schools, libraries and communities across Canada and the U.S., as well as in England, Australia and Tanzania. Of his presentations and his work with schools, libraries and communities, Mollel says, “I aim to provide a feast of words – written and spoken – for the eye, the ear and the mind; as well as for the creative imagination, and for performance.”
Through writing, storytelling and drama, Mollel hopes to empower the young, and others, with the gift of story — to write, tell, share and enjoy stories; to mentor them as he was mentored. He is available for presentations and work in schools, author visits, young writers’ conferences, as well as workshops and residencies on writing, storytelling, storytelling with drama and story performance, and drama, in programs that he can adapt for all ages and various curricular needs, determined through his discussion with schools. He is also available to conduct workshops on writing and storytelling for teachers and librarians in schools, conferences and conventions.
