Weekly Update - October 16, 2016

Hello Robina Families,

Well somehow fall snuck by and winter is upon us. I hope you are all staying toasty warm and dry as Mother Nature tries to figure out which season we are in. We have reminded our students that there is absolutely no snow balls or throwing snow in the air. Two students were innocently injured this week as they ran through some snow being thrown in the air to create a "snow fall" and there happened to be ice hiding in the snow. One of our students got it right in his eye which left quite a mark and we were very lucky it wasn't more serious. Please help us remind your children that this rule is here for everyone's safety. They are more than welcome to build things in the snow! Thanks for your help with this.

Like last week our weekly update is loaded with information. Some items have been repeated for your convenience, but there is lots of new information as well. Happy Reading!

ASSEMBLIES
As we move through the month of October, we are continuing our theme of RESPECT and we have added CARING and KINDNESS to the mix. I thought it might be beneficial to add a link to our assembly agenda for the week, so that you have an opportunity to see what your children are doing during the Friday assemblies. Friday, October 14th Assembly Agenda link.

When we break into our smaller assembly groups on Tuesday and Wednesday, we continue the work that we are doing on Fridays, but really alter it to grade level appropriate understanding and activities that each group needs to work on. Our grade 3s and 4s are currently bringing a device to those short assemblies and learning about digital citizenship and responsibility/respect as it pertains to their "Digital Citizenship Admirable Use" agreement that you and your children have both read and signed. Our grade 1s and 2s are working on manners, kindness and general school expectations.

Congratulations to our Students of the Week for this week!

Wrist Band Challenge Winner: Jordan!

Be sure to send those wristbands in and put them in the draw bin in the office. If your family is active in the Devon River Valley, please email Mrs. Kloschinsky or Mrs. Horrocks each time you do a River Valley activity and your child can stop by the office for a wrist band to put in the draw.

We are very fortunate to have a number of fun "prize" items that have been donated to our school. We will be doing weekly draws for awhile until those items run out! Thank you to Mrs. Ostonal who donated all the water bottles and to Mr. Larson who received all the t-shirts to give away. We also got a number of prizes from Club Moo - our milk club that we belong to.

Congrats to this week's winners of some of those fun items at the assembly:
Gabrielle (KTTH), Jayden (KMW); Gavin (KMW); Brodie (KMW); Anna (1B); Dayson (2A) and Matthew (2A)

Book Fair October 24 to 26

Bookaneer Book Fair – where books are the treasure - is sailing on into Robina Baker on Monday, October 24 to Wednesday October 26.  Classes will be browsing in the library on Monday. Your teacher will let you know when their class will be shopping.  Please stop by during Parent Teacher meetings!  If you are available to volunteer, please contact Mrs. Raugust at cheryl.raugust@gshare.blackgold.ca

Halloween Activities

On Monday, October 31 kids can come dressed in their Halloween costume in the morning.  The costume parade will take place first thing in the morning.   Please choose costumes that are appropriate for our K to 4 school.  If their costume has a weapon for accessory, please leave that at home.  If you are unsure what may be acceptable, please call the school at 780-987-3705.  Your teacher will communicate information about other classroom activities on Halloween in their blog or in agendas. As is the Black Gold tradition, our November PD is on November 1 so kids can sleep in after a night of trick or treating or other activities.

Hot Lunch & Milk

Our Hot Lunch Program will be up and running soon! There will be a separate email coming home tomorrow. A new group of parents have been working hard to bring you some healthier choices. We will continue to use hotlunches.net and ordering will be the same as in previous years.

Information on our milk program and milk tickets are available now on PowerSchool.  Milk will be delivered to students on Tuesday, October 18.  For $16 you will receive 20 milk tickets.  You can purchase 20 white tickets or 20 chocolate tickets.  Once your tickets are paid they will be sent home with your child (within 5 days).  Then it is up to you - there are 2 ways you can use your milk tickets:

Cut them up and send them all back to the school in an envelope or baggie - they will be kept in your child’s reading bag.   It will be up to your child to say when they will be used.

Or you can send one back in your child’s reading bag on the days that you would like your child to have milk.

This year our SWAT Team will be doing a SockDrive for all of October! Socks are the #1 need in shelters for the homeless. Our school will be collecting new socks to donate to Y.E.S.S. (Youth Empowerment Support Services). You can drop sock donations off in the office. Our last day to collect socks is October 31st.

If you would like to see what other items are in need please visit http://yess.org/donate/in-kind-donation/ and check what other "in kind" donations there are.

Laser City Reading Contest
Our school is participating in Laser City's Read to Win Contest. Laser City recognizes the importance of reading in a child's education and wants to encourage children to build reading into their daily routine. Students who meet their classroom reading goals will enter to win 2 free games of laser tag at Laser City. We will do the draws each month at the Assembly and 4 students will be presented with a certificate. The prize is good for 3 months. Students can enter as many times as they like during the month. The entry box is in the Library. The more you read, the more chances to win! We restart the contest every month. Happy Reading!

CBC Reading Contest

If you have a moment to enter the CBC Reading contest - it could benefit you and our school!  The winner of the contest will receive: - A visit from one of the 5 finalist authors to their classroom (on a date to be mutually determined, subject to CBC’s final approval) - Copies of that author’s book for all of the students in the winner’s class - A $2000 cheque to the winner’s school library - $500 cheque to the winner!  To enter, go to: http://www.cbc.ca/books/TDkids/fanchoice/rules.html

Lice Check

As a preventative measure  we will have trained volunteers at the school three or four times throughout the school year or on an as needed basis to check the students for head lice.  At this time there are NO identified cases of head lice in our school.  The trained volunteer WILL check your child’s head, unless you complete the "DO NOT CHECK MY CHILD" Form available to you on PowerSchool.

Volunteers

If you would like to volunteer at the school, please complete the "I would like to Volunteer" form available on PowerSchool and we can connect you with the right people.
